David Blair, Director of the Australian National Placenames Survey from 1998 to 2006, is an Honorary Associate in the Linguistics Department, Macquarie University.

David studied English and linguistics at Sydney University, as well as Biblical Studies and theology at a Sydney Bible College; he then had brief careers at Fisher Library and in NSW high schools before taking on a research job at Macquarie University in 1968. After 35 years of lecturing and university administration, he retired in 2003 as Dean of Humanities and Chair of the Academic Senate at Macquarie.

He was a member of the Editorial Board of the Macquarie Dictionary from its inception in 1969 until 2007. He was the editor of the Pocket Macquarie and Macquarie Junior dictionaries, co-editor of the Australian Learners Dictionary, and Australian consultant for the Encarta World English Dictionary. He has also authored or edited several standard texts on linguistics and the English language.
