Joyce Miles

Joyce Miles lived and researched in Europe for many years, where she analysed house names in their social context, with particular reference to the growth of suburbia.  She has written three books on the subject.  Since she moved to Australia she has continued her work on this topic along with research on placenames.  She gives regular ABC broadcasts on house names and related topics.

Joyce's current research areas are concentrated on:

 

  • An analysis of Australian house names;  similarities and differences compared with those of Europe
  • The influence of early settlers on Australian house names
  • Australian house names as a source of street and placenames
  • Placenames in Australia with particular reference to NSW
